Rethinking Mezzanines in Quotec

Version 2.06 reimagines mezzanine design with intelligent placement, automated structural logic and engineering built in from the very beginning.

Every now and then, a feature comes along that challenges us to rethink how design software should work.

Mezzanines are one of those features.

At first glance, adding a mezzanine to a building seems straightforward. It's simply another floor inside the structure.

In reality, it's anything but.

Every mezzanine influences structural layouts, engineering, material quantities and manufacturing. Bearer spacing, joist layouts, wall mullions, internal walls, existing columns, roller doors and floor loading all need to work together. Every design decision has a ripple effect.

With Version 2.06, we didn't set out to create another drawing tool.

We set out to rethink how mezzanines should be designed inside Quotec.

The result is an intelligent design experience that removes much of the complexity traditionally associated with mezzanines, while giving you complete control whenever you need it.

More Than Just Drawing a Platform

When our members asked for mezzanines, we knew they weren't simply asking for the ability to draw a rectangle inside a building.

They were asking for a faster, smarter way to design engineered mezzanines that integrate seamlessly with the rest of the structure.

We could have released a basic drawing tool much earlier.

Instead, we chose to invest the time in building a solution that understands the building around it. One that quietly handles many of the structural decisions automatically, allowing you to focus on the design rather than the calculations.

Sometimes the best software isn't the feature you notice.

It's the hundreds of decisions it quietly makes for you.

"Mezzanines have been one of the most technically challenging features we've developed. It wasn't enough to let members simply draw a platform—we wanted to rethink how Quotec could understand the entire building around it. That meant considering walls, columns, openings, engineering requirements and structural layouts automatically. The result is a feature that feels simple to use because so much intelligence is working behind the scenes."
— Jeff Butterworth, Senior Software Engineer

Designed Around the Way You Build

Every shed business is different, and every mezzanine has its own structural requirements.

That's why Quotec gives you complete flexibility over the configuration of every mezzanine you create.

Configure:

  • Overall width
  • Overall length
  • Bearer spacing
  • Joist spacing
  • Floor load (kPa)
  • Joist orientation (inline with or on top of bearers)

Quotec automatically suggests practical bearer and joist layouts based on the dimensions of your mezzanine, while still allowing you to customise those spacings to suit your preferred construction method.

By selecting the required floor load, Quotec also applies the appropriate engineering requirements for the intended application.

Placement That Feels Natural

Design should feel intuitive.

Creating a mezzanine starts by simply selecting the tool and moving your cursor across the building.

A live preview shows exactly where the mezzanine will be positioned before you place it, giving you complete confidence in its location.

For projects requiring precise positioning, placement dimensions can also be entered manually.

The moment the mezzanine is placed, Quotec begins analysing the surrounding building and automatically adjusts the structure where required.

Intelligence Built Into Every Placement

Unlike traditional drafting software, Quotec doesn't simply place a mezzanine inside a building.

It understands the building itself.

Place a mezzanine against a wall and Quotec automatically aligns it with the wall mullions while maintaining efficient bearer spacing. This helps reduce the number of support posts required while preserving structural integrity.

If internal walls or partition walls exist, they're recognised automatically during placement.

Where portal frame columns intersect the mezzanine, Quotec intelligently introduces the required support posts around those columns without requiring manual adjustments.

Each of these decisions happens in the background, helping produce cleaner, more buildable designs with significantly less effort.

Designed Around Roller Doors

Roller doors have always presented one of the more common design challenges when positioning mezzanines.

Version 2.06 automatically detects roller door openings and creates the required indentation within the mezzanine so the door can continue operating correctly.

No trimming.

No manual adjustments.

No guesswork.

Just intelligent design.

Create More Than a Single Platform

Many buildings require more than a single rectangular mezzanine.

Version 2.06 allows multiple mezzanines to be placed within the same building, making it easy to create L-shaped, U-shaped and other custom layouts by combining individual mezzanine sections.

Every section remains independently configurable while continuing to benefit from Quotec's intelligent structural logic.

Rethinking What Design Software Can Do

Every enhancement we develop has the same objective.

Remove repetitive work.

Improve design quality.

Help our members build better businesses.

Version 2.06 reflects that philosophy.

Rather than asking you to manually solve structural layout challenges, Quotec now handles much of that complexity automatically, allowing you to spend less time drafting and more time designing.

It's not simply a new feature.

It's a new way of thinking about mezzanine design.
